Here are some other energy efficiency projects carried out by Québec industries.

Research and demonstration project to verify the efficiency of a heat pump using cooling water from the Elkem Metal plant for heating a greenhouse complex (Les Serres Sagami (1987) inc.) (PDF | 19 ko)

The installation of heat pumps (total capacity of 1.35 MW) led to a reduction in natural gas consumption of approximately 600,000 m3 per year, despite an almost 10% increase in the surface area of the greenhouses. This reduction in the use of fossil fuels for heating the greenhouses also meant a reduction in air pollution.

Demonstration of an expert system for optimization of energy used in paper machine dryers (PDF | 28 ko)

The system allows for paper drying at minimal cost with existing equipment. It detects and rectifies sources of energy loss, such as strong fluctuations in supply temperature, condensation leaks from the tank to the sewer, and abnormally high vent openings during certain periods. Correcting these small problems allowed Domtar to save some $50,000 per year.

Development of a management system for industrial block heaters (PDF | 15 ko)

Systèmes Designtronique inc. developed the Autobloc® connector, which is designed to detect any premature malfunction in an industrial block heater or its wiring. It places the emphasis on preventive maintenance. The project involved developing and refining an intelligent device that efficiently controls the energy absorbed by an industrial block heater that has a maximum output of 1800 watts.

Development of an air flow burner (PDF | 15 ko)

Using natural gas to fuel industrial burners has a number of advantages for firms with access to this type of energy. Combustible gases are much less polluting than fossil fuels, which led to the concept of the air flow burner, a device that is placed directly in the ventilation ducts. The project focused on developing an industrial version of this type of burner. Designed by the energy engineering firm of Brais, Martrès et associés, the burner has a higher energy performance than other burners currently available on the market.

Direct Contact, oil-fired industrial water heater (PDF | 16 ko)

Sofame Inc. has designed and tested a new type of direct contact water heater fuelled by light fuel oil that is very energy efficient. This new type of water heater includes a system of direct contact burners as well as a heat exchanger that recuperates thermal discharge energy.

Development of energy efficient technologies for greenhouse production (PDF | 28 ko)

Four projects were carried out as part of this development and demonstration program aimed at solving critical problems detected during the course of energy audits. Spread out over a period of 18 months, these projects took place in the Napierville, Laval, St. Hyacinthe and Québec. Distribution of these technologies throughout the greenhouse industry will allow producers to make substantial savings by means of relatively small investments.
